Heroism Beowulf And Cuchallain - 928 Words

Many people disagree on who might qualify to be a hero. While a few people could qualify to be called a hero, many people have done some heroic things at some point in their life; Beowulf and Cuchallain demonstrated heroism through their actions. A hero in the medieval times is considered to be someone that is a noble character that fights for his honor or the honor of his kingdom or community and also someone that is willing to risk his or her life for the greater good. Beowulf was a brave man that volunteered to fight a monster that was terrorizing the people of Herot. He heard about the monster, and decided to travel all the way to Herot to assist the king in defeating the monster. â€Å" I come to proffer my wholehearted help and counsel’’†¦show more content†¦The modern day hero contributes positively to the society; he or she is a role model to different race, age and gender. In Beowulf, the king was in charge of the kingdom and he was obligated to fight with his warriors while the modern day, the President is in charge of the people but he does not fight with them in battle, he sends his soldiers off. Modern day heroes are not out looking for fame or fortune, they operate with great passion and drive to fulfill their dreams; if they get recognized for their great work, it is not publicized, it is done within the confines of the work environment. Modern day heroes do not depend on physical strength, they think of other ways to positively impact the society for example, Philanthropy is a great way to impact change in the community and philanthropist are seen as heroes in the eyes of the people they help. A person who donates his kidney to save Page 3 a life is seen as a hero, Single mother who deny themselves food or clothes to send their children to college is seen as a hero. In Comparison, the medieval view of heroism and the modern day heroism are similar in a lot of ways, they are both fighting for a good cause, to protect lives and restore peace. 1. Do you see any similarities in Stanley’s teaching with Sharp’s idea of establishing â€Å"communities of inquiry†? Differences? Has Sarah Stanley created a â€Å"community of inquiry†? Philosophy with young children video: Sarah Stanley (South Africa): Yes, I did see many similarities in Stanley’s teaching with Sharp’s idea of establishing â€Å"communities of inquiry†. There was a strong emphasis on listening to the children during their whole group and peer discussions. Stanley mentions that in order to enforce a community of inquiry teachers have to â€Å"stop telling and start listening†. This relates to Sharp’s idea of building a community of inquiry by allowing â€Å"children to find out for themselves the moral answers they are looking for†. Stanley also incorporates literature to help her students explore philosophical concepts. Including literature in the classroom is something Sharp highly recommends. Sharp explains, â€Å"if the questions do not arise naturally in the children’s conversations, the teacher could provide the class with experiences that will give rise to philosophical questions.† I believe Stanley has created a community of inquiry in her classroom.
